Leather Jacket Styles
Almost every leather jacket made today descends from one of a handful of classic designs. Know these six and you will recognize what suits you the moment you see it.
Biker
The rebel of the family. An off-center zip, wide lapels, a belt and plenty of hardware, usually in thick black leather.
Wear it with jeans and bootsBomber
A relaxed body gathered by a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem. Easy, sporty and comfortable over a sweater.
Wear it with casual weekend clothesAviator
The pilot’s jacket, lined and collared in shearling. The warmest style and the one built for real winter.
Wear it with knitwear in cold weatherClassic
A straight cut, a simple collar and clean lines. Nothing to date it, which is exactly why it never looks dated.
Wear it with almost anythingRacer
Slim and minimal, with a straight front zip and a small snap collar. The sleekest silhouette of them all.
Wear it with a shirt or fine knitLong coat
Leather cut to trench or three-quarter length. More cover, more presence and a natural choice over tailoring.
Wear it with dresses or a suitFrom the Cockpit to the Street
The leather jacket was not invented for fashion. It was invented to keep people alive in open cockpits, where nothing else stopped the wind. Its toughness came first and its style followed.
That is still the reason it works. A leather jacket carries a hundred years of pilots, riders and film heroes in its lines, and it lends a little of that confidence to whoever puts it on.
- Early 1900sAviators and soldiers wear brown leather flight jackets against wind and cold.
- 1940sThe insulated bomber jacket, often lined with sheepskin, protects aircrews at high altitude.
- 1950sHollywood and the motorcycle turn the black biker jacket into a symbol of cool.
- TodayA wardrobe classic for women and men, worn with everything from denim to evening wear.

Which Leather for Your Jacket?
The leather decides how a jacket feels on the first day and how it looks after a thousand. There is no single best one, only the best one for the way you will wear it.
- LambskinSoftestLight, smooth and supple from the first wear. It drapes close to the body, which makes it ideal for fitted and dressier jackets. Treat it a little more gently than the others.
- CowhideToughestThick, heavy and extremely hard-wearing. It starts out firm and breaks in over time, shaping itself to you. The traditional choice for biker jackets.
- GoatskinBest all-rounderLighter than cowhide and stronger than lambskin, with a distinctive pebbled grain. Comfortable quickly and durable enough for daily wear.
- ShearlingSheepskin with the wool left on, worn wool side in. Naturally insulating and the heart of every true aviator jacket.

How a Leather Jacket Should Fit
Leather stretches a little where you move and never shrinks back, so a jacket should feel snug when new. Check these five points in the mirror.
- 01ShouldersThe seam sits right on the edge of your shoulder. This is the one thing that cannot be altered.
- 02ChestClose to the body when zipped, with room for a light layer and no pulling.
- 03SleevesThey end at the wrist bone when your arms hang, and still cover it when you reach forward.
- 04LengthMost styles finish at the belt line. Longer cuts should still let you move freely.
- 05TimeWear it. Within a few weeks the leather softens and takes your shape.

Black, Brown or Tan?
Color changes the whole character of a jacket. Black is sharp and urban and goes with everything. Brown is warmer and more relaxed, and it shows the grain and the patina of the leather best. Tan is the lightest and most casual of the three, at its best in spring and summer.
If this is your first leather jacket, choose black or dark brown. If it is your second, choose the color you kept looking at the first time.
- Check the zips. They should run smoothly and feel solid, never thin or sticky.
- Check the stitching. Even, tight and straight, especially at the pockets and shoulders.
- Check the lining. Smooth against the skin and neatly sewn at the cuffs and hem.
- Check the leather. Soft, even in color and free of a plastic shine.
- Know its purpose. A fashion jacket is made for style and everyday wear. It is not protective motorcycle gear, which is far thicker and often armored.
